Are there any restrictions on where I can drive?

NO DRIVING ON 4×4 unmaintained roads or trails.  There are 4 roads that your camper van is not permitted to drive on.  This is for your safety, your vehicle’s safety and respect for local communities who are tired from helping stranded visitors who do not heed this advice.

  1. ” The Backside” 16 miles of rough, narrow roadway. This is located just past Kipahulu. It’s recommended you turn around at Kipahulu before you realize there is no option to turn around.
  2. The road to JAWS, Peahi surf spot. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting when the Big Waves strike, you’ll see everyone parked along the roadway and walking down to walking down to watch the surf.
  3. Poli Poli State Park, The Lavender Gardens are just past the entrance to this park. You can absolutely visit the Gardens but not go any further. This road is narrow with an enforced “4×4 vehicle only” road at the top. Turning around on this road requires off-roading off the vehicle due to the terrain and narrow roads.
  4. Kahakaloa, this section of the West Side Loop is very narrow, rough with steep drop-offs. Your vehicle is NOT permitted to drive the section between Waihee Ridge and Nakalele Blowhole. You can visit Waihee Ridge but not drive beyond that point. You can visit Nakalele Blowhole from the other direction but not drive beyond that point.

**These areas have little to no reception, If you are in need of assistance tow trucks will not be able to assist you in these areas. You are responsible for returning your vehicle in the same condition.

Am I able to visit Haleakala?
